ICSSR Sponsored Two Weeks Capacity Building Programme on Research Methodology and Academic Writing for Teachers and Researchers

Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) (Ministry of Education, New Delhi) in association with MDU-Centre for Professional and Allied Studies (MDU-CPAS) Gurugram Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Haryana (India) is organizing Two Weeks Capacity Building Programme on Research Methodology and Academic Writing for Teachers and Researchers In SOCIAL SCIENCES from SEPTEMBER 01 to 15, 2023

About Research Methodology Programme

The ICSSR Training and Capacity Building Programmes are extending financial support for organizing workshop on research methodology and capacity building programme to cater the needs of the social science faculties. These days Social science research is acting as a device for predicting social behavior, its planning and control. Social science research has assumed great significance as it contributes to societal development and ultimately to the nation.

Society is a diverse set of individuals and is highly interlinked, which has reshaped the research in social sciences. Now there is a need to bring together different disciplinary experts to respond to societal problems and promote their knowledge. Multidisciplinary research refers to how two or more disciplines contribute to understanding and defining what learning is. Some researchers (e.g., Strober 2011) describe cross-disciplinary, interdisciplinary, multi-disciplinary and trans- disciplinary as Parallel concepts. Under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), University Grants Commission (UGC) announced Scheme for Trans-disciplinary Research for India’s Developing Economy (STRIDE) while understanding the importance of multidisciplinary research in 2019. Scheme for promotion of academic and research collaboration (SPARC) is another initiative by MHRD towards the promotion of multidisciplinary research. Over the years, one can identify a transition in the Indian higher education from a narrow disciplinary focus towards multidisciplinary engagements. A formal recognition of this is provided by the NEP 2020

Another challenge in social science research is quality writing (academic writing). Various universities & research agencies are conducting research and producing their findings with an aim to address social problems along with its multifaceted relevance. However, the atrocities of the university and research organizations are that they are not able to produce effective academic writing. According to many acdemicians, university and research organizations in India do not have sufficient  infrastructure to produce quality researchers. Through ages it is seen that the skill of quality writing has been learnt by academician/researchers own their own. If early career teachers & researchers get enough exposure, training and support, academicians from India, for sure, will be the best in academic writing for many years to come. According to the data, poor writing skills (academic writing), inappropriate selection of methods and methodology, wrong selection of journal, are one of the top 10 reasons for rejection of manuscripts. In an attempt to improve research and academic writing, ICSSR( a government of India initiative established in 1969 for promoting social science research) is conducting capacity building programme through various institutions/ organizations, which not only contributes on enhancing the skills towards research but also attempt to inculcate writing skills and provide exposure to various stages of the publication processes.

The biggest strength of academic writers is that they can improve through practice & training. The process of practice & training often involves lots of guidance & efforts. The academic writer needs time to (a) search for appropriate style, academic & logical consistency, clarity pertaining to each type of writing and publication avenue, acknowledging the contributions & information made by other academicians (b) understand them (c) practice these skills over the years.

This CBP intends to fill up the above gaps. In fact, the NEP 2020 (https://niepid.nic.in/nep_2020.pdf, p. 43) envisages such a course for “All fresh Ph.D. entrants irrespective of discipline, will be required to take credit-based courses in teaching/ education/ pedagogy/ writing”.

Given the experience, interests, and expertise available with the sponsoring and hosting organization, the proposed CBP intends to enrich the capability of conducting quality research among early teachers and researchers of social sciences and further bring out research output into publishable material of high-quality in the form of journal articles or books

Objectives of the Programme
