ICSSR Sponsored Capacity Building Programme for Faculty Members in Social Sciences

Programme Introduction

The Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID), Chandigarh proposes to organise a two-week Capacity Building Programme (CBP) on Research Methodology for young faculty in Social Sciences for the benefit of university, college teachers as well as faculty from social science research institutes from 20 November – 02 December, 2023 (12 working days).

The proposed two week CBP would help young academicians grasp the nuances of vast spectrum of the interdisciplinary academic research. This programme for faculty members in social sciences has been conceptualised as a comprehensive tool to address issues related to quality of research and teaching, policy formulation, institution building and so on. It calls for the establishment of conditions that allows individuals to be engaged in the process of collective learning and sharing of knowledge.

The major goal of the CBP is to promote and emphasise on various theoretical and methodological issues and usages of research tools and techniques by the faculty members for conducting high quality and ethical research, which would facilitate improving the vitality of higher educational and research institutes and their excellence.

Objectives of the Programme

The objective of the programme/course is to improve research aptitude of the young faculty members of the universities, colleges and social science research institutions who intend to conduct research studies in social science disciplines. The core objective of the programme would be to enable young faculties to conduct their research work in scientific and systematic manner and to turn their completed research into published materials in the form of books and articles in academic journals. Specifically, the objectives are to:  Develop critical thought process, conceptualisation, meaning and approaches to research;

  • Enhance theoretical and methodological understanding along with quantitative and qualitative research methods in social science research;
  • Enhance skills for preparing an appropriate research design, including conducting an overview of literature, formulating research questions and hypotheses, collection of information and analysis;
  • Develop understanding of statistical tools, data handling and analysis;
  • Enhance research publication skills;
  • Capacity building for writing research grant applications; and,
  • Guide participants for collaborative and multidisciplinary research in the areas of social science and allied disciplines.

Programme Outline

The programme/course has been designed to be conducted offline in a modular format with a special emphasis on interactive sessions, exercises and discussions on sample research proposals/papers prepared by the participants during the training. The broad overview of the course are:

  1. Fundamentals and meaning of research with focus on ontology, epistemology and methodology of doing social research;
  2. Idea and approaches of research – nature, scope and theories; tenets of qualitative and quantitative research;
  3. Research Design, usage of various tools and techniques, methods and processes of qualitative and quantitative data collection;
  4. Application of statistical software (Excel, SPSS and R) for data processing and analysis;
  5. Ethics and politics of Social Science research;
  6. Emerging trends and tenets of academic writing and publications and
  7. Preparation of research proposal and avenues of funding opportunities.

Duration of the Course: Two Weeks (12 working days).

Number of Seats: Total 30 seats for participants (10 local, 10 from the state and 10 from outside state).

Application and Selection Criteria: This programme/course is intended to provide opportunity to young faculty members (not below the level of Assistant Professor) of any UGC recognised University/College/ Institution (including ICSSR research institutes and reputed Social Science research institution engaged research) engaged in Social Science research. Selection criteria as laid down by the ICSSR shall be followed.

Fee: This CBP is sponsored by the ICSSR, New Delhi and therefore, NO FEE shall be charged from the participants for attending the programme.

Travel & Accommodation: The selected participants will be reimbursed to and fro travel fare (Three tier AC train/shared taxi/bus) as per the ICSSR norms and availability of funds. Accommodation to outstation participants will be provided at free of cost at the CRRID guest house.

Certification: Participants will be issued certificates upon successful completion of the programme.
