Research Grant Scheme by Human Resource Development Group, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research

Research in the areas of Science & Technology, including Agriculture, Engineering, and Medicine, is supported financially by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR). Professors/Experts in regular employment at universities, IITs, post-graduate schools, and recognised R&D facilities in the public and private sectors are offered grants as a form of help. For consideration for CSIR support, research proposals of an applied nature as well as those related to basic sciences that aim to address particular issues being investigated by CSIR laboratories, or in more recent and related disciplines, are taken into account. Priority is given to cross-disciplinary initiatives involving collaboration between organisations, particularly those involving CSIR laboratories, and to plans that are pertinent to the research agendas of CSIR laboratories.

A time-bound research proposal that is clear, specific, and employs or suggests a novel idea , as well as realistic and feasible means of execution, has a good chance of being funded by the CSIR. The CSIR provides crucial financial support for workable research plans in order to achieve real advancements in particular sectors and areas.

The primary goal of CSIR research grants is to enhance the research resources offered by the sponsoring universities. One or more Junior Research Fellows (JRF), Senior Research Fellows (SRF), Research Associates (RA), contingencies, and equipment are covered by the given funds. Typically, only little sums are approved for equipment. Both graded positions and money for other types of expenses are not authorised.

The establishment (de novo) of specialist facilities, centres, or divisions is not meant to be supported by EMR programmes. These programmes are designed to support ongoing R&D initiatives in institutions, laboratories, departments, etc. that have the necessary infrastructure.

A study scheme may include more than one investigator, in which case the first investigator will be referred to as the “Principal Investigator” depending on the scope and nature of the research involved (PI). When two or more universities are involved in a joint initiative, the proposal must include the approval of each of those institutions. CSIR laboratories are encouraged to participate in collaborative projects.
